Assignment 9 – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
Summary first interview: Anna-Maria, 23, German law student
Who
When asking Anna-Maria whether she has any special diet, she told me that she tried to eat vegetarian for the last two months, but that she gave up. Now, she still trys to eat healthy and pays a lot of attention to her nutrition, e.g. she always eats a lot of veggies and fruits and limits the amount of meat she takes in. Although she cares a lot about her nutrition, she goes to fast-food restaurants sometimes, especially when she is on the road and has a long ride to make or when she is in a hurry.
What
When she would be at a fast-food restaurant which mainly serves burgers, she would go for a normal burger with meat (she mentioned that she loves cheeseburgers). Sometimes she would also go for a vegetarian meal, if the restaurant offers some good vegetarian alternatives, but she would never leave the restaurant just because it offers too few vegetarian meals.
Why
When asking Anna-Maria why she would not choose to eat a vegetarian meal at a fast-food restaurant although she tries to eat healthy, she responded that meat is not necessarily bad. It just depends on the amount of meat you're taking in. Thus, she tries to limit her consumption of meat when cooking on her own, but she doesn't mind eating meat, when going to a fast-food restaurant.Summary second interview: Ann, 19, Information science student from Australia
Who
Ann has no special diet, but nevertheless, she pays a lot of attention to her food. Due to the fact that she does a lot of sports, she also wants to eat healthy. When asking her, whether she goes to fast-food restaurants sometimes, she answered that she tries to limit it, but she can't avoid it 100%.
What
When Ann goes to a fast-food restaurant which mainly serves burgers, she would go with a normal burger. She would even go with a meal with meat when the restaurant would offer vegetarian alternatives because she believes that vegetarian alternatives are not as good as ordinary meals most of the time. Except for fast-food restaurants with pizza: here she wouldn't mind going with a pizza Margherita.
Why
When asking Ann about the reason why she would not choose to eat a vegetarian meal although she tries to eat healthily, she told me that she doesn't think that eating meat at fast-food restaurants is unhealthy.
Summary third interview: Jakob, 25, Sports student from Germany
Who
Jakob has a very strict diet, because he has to stick to a meal plan provided by his personal trainer. Thus, he never eats at fast-food restaurants. He told me, that there are always better alternatives to fast-food restaurants where he could go. Thus, he replied to the question about what meal he would choose when at a fast-food restaurant, with "nothing". He would not even go to a vegetarian or more healthy fast-food restaurant, because he believes, that it would still be too unhealthy.
Summary fourth interview: Charly, 23, Engineering student from the US
Who
Charly has a vegan diet. Therefore, she pays a lot of attention to her nutrition and spends a lot of time thinking about what to eat. She would love to eat in fast-food restaurants sometimes, because typically she always has to cook on her own. The problem is, that there are no vegan fast-food restaurants and even a vegetarian fast-food restaurant would not improve her situation, since a vegan diet is even more strict than a vegetarian one.
What
When asking her what she would choose when at an ordinary fast-food restaurant which serves burgers, she replied that she would choose nothing and would just leave the restaurant again. She wouldn't even go to a vegetarian fast-food restaurant, because she doesn't eat dairy products and eggs and most of the vegetarian meals contain one of those ingredients.
Summary fifth interview: Simon, 20, Engineering student from the US
Who
Simon has a vegetarian diet and always tries to eat healthily. When asking him whether he goes to fast-food restaurants sometimes, he replied with never. He just decided about two years ago not to go to restaurants like this anymore, because there are so many aspects which speak against eating at a fast-food restaurant.
What
Simon would choose no meal when at a fast-food restaurant. He would rather leave than eating something there. His attitude would not change if the fast-food restaurant would offer vegetarian meals. Why
When asking him why, he told me about his decison not to do it. That's it.Summary
I found out, that there are some people who pay attention to their nutrition, but don’t mind to eat to meat in fast-food restaurants. In addition, I learned that a lot of nutrition conscious people are not going to fast-food restaurants at all.Table
Inside the boundary
|
Outside the boundary
|
| Who is in: People who pay attention to their nutrition, who try to eat healthy, who eat vegetarian |
Who is not: People who don’t care a lot about their nutrition, who want to eat healthy, but don’t mind eating meat at fast-food restaurants sometimes or people who eat vegan |
| What the need is: The need for vegetarian, healthy food | What the need is not: The people outside the boundary are just hungry and want to eat food. But they don’t have any need for a special meal |
| Because people try to limit their consumption of meat and/or because people don’t want to eat meat due to ethical aspects | Alternative explanations: some people eat vegan and thus have even more restrictions on their diet than a vegetarian has |
Based on some of your interviews it seems like some people want to be vegetarians and eat less meats but there's just not that many options, like you said. I also have come to find that eating healthy tends to be more expensive or even if you try to buy organically. It is like the stores and restaurants don't want you to be healthy and/or the majority is eating unhealthy. But could that be because of the lack of options?
ReplyDeleteEmilia,
ReplyDeleteI think that is one of the best ideas. I think that this is a market that is very untapped and just starting to be recognized. Not to mention that not even just people who are trying to eat healthy would be the only ones to partake. If the options were tasty, more people would choice those options regardless, and more so if they were trying to watch their diet.
