Assignment 7 – Testing the hypothesis
1) Picking an opportunity
I picked the opportunity for more vegetarian food in fast-food restaurants.
What: They can’t find much to eat in fast-food restaurants
Why: high costs of producing vegetarian food separately from meat products
- Are there other people who don’t want to eat meat at fast-food restaurants?
- Are there other people seeking more vegetarian alternatives at fast food restaurants?
- Does the vegetarian offering of a fast-food restaurant depend on the kind of food the restaurant offers?
- Are there just some fast-food restaurants without vegetarian alternatives or is kind of every fast-food restaurant “vegetarian unfriendly”
- Do you think only some fast-food restaurants experience those challenges and that it might be easier for other fast-food restaurants to expand their vegetarian menu?
- People who pursue a healthy lifestyle
- People who don’t want to eat meat all the time
- Vegetarians
- People with special diets
- There are already fast-food restaurants with vegetarian alternatives, e.g. fast-food restaurants offering salads, pizza, vegetarian hamburgers
- Most of the fast-food restaurants offering hamburgers do not offer a lot of vegetarian alternatives on their menu
- It depends on the location whether a fast-food restaurant offers vegetarian alternatives, especially here in the US it is more difficult to get vegetarian alternatives than in Europe
- Might be expensive to produce vegetarian food, since it should not come in contact with meat
- Too few people who would buy vegetarian food
- Fast-food restaurant owners did not notice the trend to vegetarian food
- Owners would have to change their menus which might be expensive
- Many restaurants do not know how which vegetarian alternatives they could offer
2) Hypothesis
Who: vegetariansWhat: They can’t find much to eat in fast-food restaurants
Why: high costs of producing vegetarian food separately from meat products
3) Testing the hypothesis
Questions about the “who”:
- Are there other people who can’t find anything to eat in fast-food restaurants?- Are there other people who don’t want to eat meat at fast-food restaurants?
- Are there other people seeking more vegetarian alternatives at fast food restaurants?
Questions about the “what”:
- Can they find nothing at all to eat or is there just not a big offering in vegetarian alternatives?- Does the vegetarian offering of a fast-food restaurant depend on the kind of food the restaurant offers?
- Are there just some fast-food restaurants without vegetarian alternatives or is kind of every fast-food restaurant “vegetarian unfriendly”
Questions about the “why”:
- Why do you think fast-food restaurants do not extend their menus for more vegetarian alternatives?- Do you think only some fast-food restaurants experience those challenges and that it might be easier for other fast-food restaurants to expand their vegetarian menu?
4) Interviews
In the following, I summarized the answers from my interviewees on the above-mentioned questions in order to test my hypothesis and get different views on this topicAbout the “who”:
- People who care about their nutrition a lot- People who pursue a healthy lifestyle
- People who don’t want to eat meat all the time
- Vegetarians
- People with special diets
About the “what”:
- Most of the fast-food restaurants offer a vegetarian alternative, but the offering is very limited- There are already fast-food restaurants with vegetarian alternatives, e.g. fast-food restaurants offering salads, pizza, vegetarian hamburgers
About the “why”:
- Fast-food restaurants don’t want to spend money to invest in new machines to produce vegetarian food- Might be expensive to produce vegetarian food, since it should not come in contact with meat
- Too few people who would buy vegetarian food
- Fast-food restaurant owners did not notice the trend to vegetarian food
- Owners would have to change their menus which might be expensive
- Many restaurants do not know how which vegetarian alternatives they could offer
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am not too knowledgeable about the vegetarian world and how many people are impacted by it. I can remember a time when that was not an option and now a lot of restaurants are required to have a vegetarian section. It is interesting to see that there are more unhealthy options than healthy ones and they also tend to be more expensive. In order for this to be effective for fast foods is they will need to invest in a whole new area to make a vegetarian meal because it can not be close to the meat.
Ivey,
ReplyDeleteI really like your idea and the implications that it has. Like the person above me, I don't have much experience in this department either, However I do know that some places are trying to figure it out, because like you had said in an earlier post it is starting to trend and it is becoming a very larger market. I do agree that there are some options available at most places, but definitely not nearly enough. I think that the next place that really takes this opportunity seriously is going to benefit from it immensely.
