Assignment 2 Bug List
Bug list
Bug #1: Opening hours at the Florida Pool on Campus (it is only
open for one hour in the morning and then it opens at noon again)
Why it
exists: In order to keep the pool open
the recreation center needs lifeguards, which costs a lot of money. There might
be not enough guests in the morning, so that it won’t be worth paying a
lifeguard.
Bug #2: Long queue at Walmart (2900 SW 42nd St, Gainesville, FL
32608) in the evening
Why it exists: A lot of people buy groceries before
they return home from work. Although this Walmart has a lot of check-outs,
there are still not enough for rush-hour and in addition checking-out takes a
lot of time.
Bug #3: Empty shelves at Walmart (2900 SW 42nd St,
Gainesville, FL 32608) in the evening
Why it
exists: There are so many people going
to Walmart during rush-hour that the employees do not have enough time to fill
the empty shelves again. In addition there might not enough employees engaged
during rush-hour.
Bug #4: Poorly equipped kitchen and dorms in Weaver Hall at the
UF campus
Why it exists: The UF housing department might fear
that the stuff gets stolen or is not be treated well. So everyone has to bring
his own stuff and kitchen equipment.
Bug #5: Usage of plastic bags in US supermarkets
Why it
exists: It’s very convenient for
people to have their groceries packed in plastic bags, because they do not have
to remind themselves of taking bags with them when going to the supermarket.
They just get free plastic bags at the supermarket, although plastic bags are
especially harmful to the environment.
Bug #6: No supermarkets on campus
Why it exists: Most of the students are making use
of the dining halls and other restaurants like Subway, Starbucks etc. since
they do not want or just do not have the equipment to prepare their own food. Thus,
supermarkets might not attract enough customers. In addition supermarkets take
a lot of space which might not be available or too expensive on campus.
Bug #7: User unfriendly website of the University of Mannheim (my
home university)
Why it
exists: The website is mainly for
providing course content to the students. The university does not care much
about the user-experience, because it’s only for students. Since students don’t
have the choice whether to use the website or not (they just have to use it),
the university might save the money for more important investments.
Bug #8: Everything is so far away in the US. You always have to
use a car to get around
Why it
exists: Compared to Europe, there is
so much space in the US. I think that’s why the people tend to build such huge
streets and do not try to limit the space they are using.
Bug #9: Bad public transportation, hardly any train system in the
US
Why it
exists: Since everything is so far
away, going by train takes a while. Although I think it’s not the only reason, because
there are a lot of bus providers too. And going by bus takes even longer.
Bug #10: Earphones get broken so easily especially at the part,
where you put them into the phone
Why it
exists: Producer try to use low cost
material, which results in bad quality. Since this part of earphones is
especially sensible, it may break at first.
Bug #11: So little vegetarian alternatives in fast food restaurants
Why it
exists: I think most of the people who
go to fast food restaurants, don’t care a lot about their nutrition. That’s why
most of them might not be vegetarians and thus don’t demand vegetarian food in
fast-food restaurants. Since supply and demand are matching, there are so
little vegetarian alternatives.
Bug #12: Nuts are so expensive at the supermarket
Why it
exists: It’s very expensive to produce
nuts and most of the people who want to eat nuts, are willing to spend more money
on them. That might be the reason why they are so expensive.
Bug #13: The coffee at the dining halls tastes nasty
Why it
exists: The dining halls might try to
cut costs where possible. This includes reducing the quality of foods and
drinks and is maybe the reason for the bad coffee quality.
Bug #14: The water tastes like chlorine.
Why it
exists: Maybe the city has not enough deep
water reserves where they can draw there water from. It might be the case that
they have to use so much chlorine to clear dirty water, that in the end, the
cleared water tastes like chlorine.
Bug #15: Only few plug sockets at my room in Weaver Hall.
Why it exists: Plug sockets are expensive to install. That might be the
reason, why the architects or builders of weaver hall tried to install as less
as possible.
Bug #16: No clear announcement in the buses at UF campus about
which bus stop comes next
Why it
exists: Maybe the bus drivers think that
everyone who takes the bus knows exactly where the bus is going. In addition I
think some bus drivers are too lazy to announce the bus stations properly.
Bug #17: The walls in Weaver Hall are so thin, that you can hear
everything from the floor, the rooms next to my room and even the room above
mine
Why it
exists: I think it’s the cost argument
again. Thicker walls are just more expensive.
Bug #18: There are no Victoria’s Secret stores in Europe, where you
can buy underwear (except London)
Why it
exists: To be honest, I am not sure why
there are no stores with underwear, because there are so many women who would definitely
buy VS underwear in Europe. But maybe it’s because of the customs or import tariffs
in Europe or something.
Bug #19: Oftentimes I cannot watch German videos or movies here in
the US (especially from German websites)
Why it exists: I am not a tech specialist, thus I do not know the exact
reason. But maybe it has something to do with licencing rights.
Bug #20: There are so many shootings in the US (last one in
Jacksonville)
Why it
exists: There are people with mental
health problems everywhere around the world. But since it is legal to keep
weapons in the US, these people get access to dangerous weapons more easily.
Reflection:
For me it wasn’t
really difficult to create the bug list, since there are so many things I would
like to change. Although sometimes these are really small things which could easily
be changed. More difficult for me was the part with the “why it exists”,
because sometimes I didn’t think about it before. It does make sense to think
about it, although sometimes I get a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness
because some points you can’t change on your own, but you need a whole bunch of
people or even the government to change it.
